Taryn Simon’s A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters
Simon travelled around the world to research bloodlines and the stories associated with each bloodline. Four years of traveling brought Simon to victims of genocide in Bosnia, infected test rabbits in Australia, the first woman to hijack an airplane, and the living dead in India.
These portraits are beautifully executed. The off-white, shadowless background allows the viewer to only focus on the figure. This series shows very specific bloodlines and all very different. This sense of documentation and diversity is what I strive for in my exploration of various cultural acceptances of appearance.
I only found this artist a few days ago and noticed that this series was up at MOCA in downtown LA until January 7 this year. A missed opportunity.
Simon has done two TED talks that I need to check out.
